Doreen Frost ~ Designer, Teacher & Merry Maker of Original Needle~Work Creations, Folky Fraktur Woole~Worked Animals & Needle Work Patterns.

I have always dreamed of owning my own business, working with my hands, creating what made my heart sing . Fifteen years ago that dream began to take shape. My business grew slowly at first and I have dabbled in many different art forms (which I still do from time to time :). Six years ago I decided to concentrate on my love of Punch Needle Embroidery. I did loads of research, purchased the tools & supplies, that I knew I would enjoy using, and taught myself everything I could (and felt I needed to know) about this wonderful needle art. In 2011, I began offering my original Punch Needle Embroidery designs and things just took off from there!! Over the years my business has grown tremendously. I now travel throughout New England teaching classes & giving workshops. I also hold small classes here, in our Vermont home in Autumn & Early Winter. Outside, the wind howls, crisp leaves fly past the windows & snow swirls about... inside, a cozy fire burns and a homemade meal is prepared..we settle ourselves with our hoop & needles and enjoy a day of learning, goode conversation, friends and food. Each day I give thanks for this wonderful life I live. ~ doreen

~Online Class First Look~

Goode Sunday Afternoon Friends.  I hope this note finds you well and enjoying your weekend.  It is lovely here in Vermont.  Cloudy and warm with rain moving in later this evening.  Mark has been working in the garden this morning while I did a bit of Sunday cleaning, hung some laundry on the line, filled the humming bird feeder (when I popped out onto the front porch this morning to have my coffee a wee humming bird, who was apparently waiting for me to emerge, buzzed him or herself right in my face and hovered there for several seconds as if saying..."we are back..please fill our feeder" which, I ran in and did)   AND...I finished sketching  the design for my upcoming ONLINE PUNCH NEEDLE EMBROIDERY CLASS :).

You can see a "First Look" of the design and materials in the photo to your left.  There will be THREE finishing options for you to chose from...

1.  Just the center design punched and placed on a painted and aged box.

2.  The center design punched and then finished with a background of wool, with wool applique accents and used as a table mat.

3.  The center design punched, finished with the wool applique background and then laid on top of the painted & aged box.

** I will cover EVERYTHING in class from tracing your design onto your weavers cloth to finishing the project in all the ways mentioned above.

***The class will be an online video class..I will be giving you a list of supplies,  CLASS INFORMATION, class cost, etc. soon and then give you a week or so to collect your supplies.

**** I begin filming tomorrow and if all goes as planned class will begin the 2nd week in June.

~If I Were A Skein Of Wool~

Goode May Morning To You.  I hope this message finds you well. Here in Vermont we are enjoying warm sunshine accompanied by a blustery cold wind.   We are still burning wood each morning and some areas actually work up to a dusting of snow.  Tis an odd Spring to be sure. :)

I belong to a wonderful group called Flourish through The Joyful Entrepreneur.  What an amazing group.  Even though I have been working & creating from home for over 12 years now, it really wasn't until I began my journey with Punch Needle Embroidery that my hobby became A REAL BUSINESS.  I now take my business and the running of that business seriously because, if I want it to continue and grow...I HAVE TO.  Just sitting down and creating isn't enough..there is so much more to it.  Weekly paperwork, submissions, taxes, following through, communication (calls, emails, social networking, blogging) submissions, ads, branching out, branding, seo..the list goes on and on.  SO, as part of "the business of running a business" I belong to several wonderful entrepreneur groups...Flourish being one of them.

Recently we were given a Branding challenge to create a Pinterest board that represents our business brand.  At first I was at a total loss as to what I would pin to this board and then I realized..I already have a board that represents ME and My Brand...it's who I am...what I love..how I create.  It's called;

The entire board is a collection/representation of my love for wool, color, nature and the coziness of home.  Something that I feel like my business represents and speaks of who I am.

If I were a skein of wool.....this is who I would be
The color..the texture..♥♥♥

pop by and have a look at my Pinterest Board..let me know what you think...does it represent me?  When you see my work..does it evoke a sense of home, coziness, color, texture and nature?

Until next time....♥Doreen

~Punching With Two Strands, Circles & A Video~

Goode Spring afternoon friends.  I hope this "letter" finds you well. :~)

I am popping in today to answer a few questions, I have had, regarding my particular way of punching.

The first one ..Punching with two strands of floss at the same time (using a ball of Valdani Pearl Cotton, size 8 floss. :)

I've had more than a few folks asking about those two lovely strands of floss emerging from my needle tip.  Now you might think.....oh how simple but, I have found through trial and error, that there is a smooth way and a messy way.

**You will need your medium needle tip as two strands of size 8, pearl cotton, will not fit through your small needle tip (yes..I've tried it...and my poor needle threader took a beating and did not make it...lol).

Pull a thread end  from the outside of the ball of floss and a thread end from the center. Make sure these two strands are even and then thread your needle with them.   Pop your ball of floss into your floss keep (or juice glass) and punch away.

Now, you may think it would  just be easier to use two separate balls, however, when you do so, the two individual lines of floss tend to jumble up and wrap around each other, causing a tangled mess before it reaches the end of your needle.  NOT fun and wasteful of our favorite floss. Using the two strands, from the same ball of floss, prevents this from happening.

video

I LOVE the look using two strands creates.  It gives the threads a tighter, more twisted look that I find so very lovely :)

Another question folks have asked....punching a large background in a circular manner.  I simply break it up in small sections like you see in the photo below.  This is my favorite way to punch when using Valdani pearl cotton as it let's the variations show is a lovely pattern.

I hope you find this information helpful and enjoyable.   Until next time, wishing you a pleasant evening, doreen

**This info can also be found in all of my patterns.

What Inspires You?

Goode day Friends. I hope this message finds you well and enjoying some lovely Spring days.  Here in Vermont we are GREEN once again.  On Monday we had a much needed day of soaking rain that has given our landscape the boost it needed to come forth and show it's beauty. May is a beautiful month, tho the first two weeks are always quite challenging for me as it sets my asthma and allergies on a quick trigger and just walking Oliver will cause an explosion. SO...for these first two weeks of May, I keep myself tucked into my studio and take full advantage of this time to plan, plan, plan and work, work, work!  I have several goode things coming up in the next few weeks and I can not wait to share them with all of you. An online class, a giveaway and a new group are all included. :) I have two new patterns to release and a web show to take care of this week and then I will be diving headlong into these new happenings.

IN THE MEANTIME.....I am popping in today  to ask..what inspires you?  For me it is color..often in nature or somehow connected with nature.  My favorite color palette contains shades of brown, white/ivory and green and often with a pop of red thrown in.

.... I am sure you already realized my love of these colors by the look of my website, blog and etsy shop :)  I am also HIGHLY inspired by my love of old homes, the revolutionary war era, antique furniture, household items and heritage crafts.

What inspires you?
